Ghatasthapana Puja Vidhi 2026: Establish the Kalash, Invite the Devi

Ghatasthapana puja vidhi is the sacred method of installing a kalash on Pratipada tithi, inviting Maa Durga to dwell in your home for auspicious nine nights. Every Navratri Sadhana starts on this day. On Sunday, 11 October 2026, several homes and temples across India perform this vidhi.

This guide gives you the verified muhurat, the complete samagri and every step, with the Jyotish remedies and intention for growth and wellness.

Key Insights

Ghatasthapana 2026 falls on Sunday, 11 October.

In New Delhi, the muhurat runs from 06:19 AM to 10:12 AM (Amrit Kaal). The golden rule is simple: install the kalash in the first third of the day, and always before Hindu midday, while Pratipada prevails. Or in at least in the Abhijit Muhurat.

The kalash unites all five elements, earth, water, fire, air and space, in a single act of worship. This is also what we do in Jyotish at Pancha Siddhi.

Ghatasthapana puja vidhi Kalash Pot

Muhurat rules

  1. Perform Ghatasthapana in the morning half of the day (i.e. from 6 AM to 12 PM) in Pratipada tithi.
  2. Always complete it before Hindu midday. Do not perform it at night. If the morning slips away, the Abhijit muhurat remains the recognized alternative.
  3. However, Chitra nakshatra is avoided for Ghatasthapana and Vaidhriti yoga, yet does not forbid them. This year, both cover the entire day. Therefore, families may follow the standard morning window, while cautious practitioners may choose Abhijit muhurat. Either way, a sincere Sankalp or intention is all that matters.

What Ghatasthapana means

Ghatasthapana joins Ghata, a sacred water-pot, and Sthapana, establishment. It is also called Kalash Sthapana in Hindi. Through it, the devotee invites Shakti, in her nine forms and her three great aspects of Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswati, into one sanctified Kalash.

The traditional Kalash verse, recited in puja paddhatis across India, explains why a simple pot can hold the divine:

कलशस्य मुखे विष्णुः कण्ठे रुद्रः समाश्रितः। मूले त्वस्य स्थितो ब्रह्मा मध्ये मातृगणाः स्मृताः॥

Lord Vishnu dwells at the mouth of the kalash and Lord Shiva at its neck. Lord Brahma rests at its base, and the Divine Mothers in its middle.

The kalash holds all five elements of the Pancha Tattva: earth in the soil, water in the vessel, fire in the lamp, air in the incense, and space in its hollow. Since Ayurveda builds the body from these same elements, the kalash mirrors the self you refine through nine nights.

Ghatasthapana Puja Vidhi: Step by step at home

The complete vidhi takes about forty minutes, and one person can perform it alone, without a priest. Keep the steps in order and with complete faith and devotion.

It is always a good practice in any sadhana to keep all items well planned in advance.

Step 1: Purify and begin with Ganapati Puja

Bathe, wear clean & light clothes and sit facing east or north, ideally in the north-east corner of your home. Clean the spot, place a wooden chowki and spread a red cloth.

Then invoke Ganesha, the remover of obstacles, and take your sankalp with water, akshat and a flower in your right palm. State your place, the date, your gotra, your name and your purpose. The full Sanskrit sankalp appears in our Guide to Navratri Sadhana.

Step 2: Sow the Jau in three layers

Spread a first layer of soil in the clay pot and scatter the grains. Add a second layer of soil and sow more grains near the rim. Finally, cover with a third, thin layer and sprinkle water until the soil just settles.

Step 3: Prepare the Kalash

Draw a swastika on the kalash with kumkum, and tie moli around its neck. Fill it with water up to the neck, adding a little Ganga jal. Then offer a supari, a coin, a few durva grass, akshat and little rose water into the water.

Step 4: Leaves, Lid and Coconut

Arrange five Ashoka or mango leaves around the mouth, and cover it with a lid filled with akshat. Wrap the coconut in red cloth, tie it with moli and set it on the lid. Now place the kalash at the centre of the grain pot.

Step 5: Invite the Devi

Touch the kalash with your right hand and recite the Kalash mantra given below. Then, with folded hands, request Maa Durga to accept your prayers and reside in the kalash for nine nights:

ॐ श्रीदुर्गायै नमः। आवाहयामि, स्थापयामि, पूजयामि॥

Salutations to Sri Durga Maa. I invite you, I establish you to worship you.

Step 6: Offer the Panchopachara Puja

Panchopachara means worship with five offerings. First wave the lamp before the kalash, then offer incense, flowers and fragrance. Finally, offer fruits and sweets as naivedya, adorn the Devi with the red chunni, and perform aarti to Shailaputri, the Devi of Day 1.

Nine Nights with Kalash

Once installed, the kalash stays in its place until Vijayadashami. Light the lamp before it every morning and evening, offer a fresh flower, and sprinkle the barley lightly so the soil stays moist.

In engineering projects, engineers log every cycle to prove continuity. Similarly, the green shoots quietly record your nine days of care. Read them as a gentle mirror of your discipline and your devotion to the divine mother.

Kalash Visarjan on Vijayadashami

The kalash completes its sacred role on Tuesday, 20 October 2026. In New Delhi, Drik Panchang gives the Durga Visarjan muhurat from 01:14 PM to 03:30 PM. Check the local Muhurat by link given above.

Thank Maa Durga with a short aarti, then sprinkle the kalash water through every room and pour the rest at a Tulsi. Share the coconut as prasad, keep a few barley shoots as a blessing, and return the soil to a garden.

Mistakes to avoid in Ghatasthapana

Never establish the kalash at night, in the afternoon (except the Abhijit Muhurat) or on Amavasya. Equally, never move it during the nine days, because the Devi’s seat must stay undisturbed and respected at all costs.

Avoid plastic vessels and synthetic flowers, which dull the ritual’s natural elements. Above all, never skip the sankalp, since a ritual without stated purpose has form but no direction.

This is where the manifestation starts.
